Frida's Restaurant - Ciudad Juarez, Mexico- Page 2
The back wall of Frida’s Restaurant is filled with reproductions of many of her self-portraits. Clearly art which expresses the thoughts a troubled individual, it is so because Frida Kahlo was to endure a great deal of pain in her life. In 1925 she was involved in an accident between a bus and a train car, severely injuring her right leg and pelvis and leaving her unable to have children. Her first self-portait was painted during her convelescence. “I suffered two great accidents in my life,” she said later in life, referring to the one in 1925 as the first. “The other accident is Diego.” But do not infer too much from this quote or the pain expressed in her self-portraits. Frida Kahlo was a beautiful woman whose sense of humor, passion for life, and painting made a deep and lasting impression upon the entire Western world. Despite Diego's many infidelities,
and later her own, except for one year in which they were divorced, they were together for 25 years until her many illnesses and injuries eventually overcame her.
If you want to learn more about her, you can visit the Artchive web site, which is where I obtained some the information above, and you should definitely see the double Academy Award winning movie, "Frida", staring Salma Hayek. It is without question one of the best movies I have ever seen. |
