Restaurant Hong Kong China - Juarez, Mexico
I try to remain unbiased, but I must begin by stating that Hong Kong China in Juarez, Mexico serves some of the best Chinese food I've ever tasted, anywhere. Chinese food is extremely popular in Juarez, so much so it’s hard to drive 5 blocks in any direction without seeing a Chinese restaurant.
Hong Kong China is located one block south of Ave. 16 de Septiembre on Calle Peru. It’s certainly one of the city’s best, if not best known, restaurants. Hong Kong China is owned by Señora Maria Luisa Su de Chin, a very gracious lady who traces her ancestry to (surprise) Hong Kong. The dining room is small, seating perhaps 40 people, and tastefully decorated.
The
day of my visit I had been dreaming for weeks about this restaurant’s
Camarónes con Salsa Langosta (shrimp with
lobster sauce). It was a rainy, nasty Saturday afternoon,
a perfect time to relax for an hour or so over a good meal.
Before the main dish, however, a word about the rollos de huevos (egg rolls). Do not order egg rolls for each person in your party. This photo shows Señora Chin’s idea of egg rolls. Whether or not they qualify for Guiness Book of World Records regarding size or not I have no idea, but they are the largest, and most delicious egg rolls, I have ever been served. They came in an order of two for 25 pesos (about $2.50) and were practically a meal unto themselves.
When the shrimp in lobster sauce finally arrives, the very aroma of it is almost worth the wait. Hard as it was to take pictures before diving in, in the interests of Chinese food lovers everywhere I managed to do so... Regarding the Camarónes con Salsa Langosta, well, not being a culinary writer the only word I can find to describe this selection would be heavenly. No sweet and sour sauce or hot mustard is required to enjoy this dish.
