Warning: Juarez has recently experienced a dramatic increase of street violence that in some cases has led to the deaths of innocent bystanders. We recommend that you not travel to the city at this time. For more information, visit the El Paso Times website at www.elpasotimes.com.

Tax Free, Duty Free Stores in El Paso

Guerras

There are three stores on Stanton Street in El Paso where you can buy liquor and American cigarrettes for excellent prices and pay no taxes or import fees, but you must be going to Mexico.  The store pictured here, Guerras, is exactly one block north of the Stanton Street Bridge on the west side of the street.  American cigarrettes were only $14 a carton as of March, 2004.  They carry Benson and Hedges, Marboros, and a few other brands.  Prices on liquor are not discounted quite as heavily, but the prices are substantially lower than buying the same liquor in the U.S.

Jeta

There are two Jeta stores.  They both carry the same line of products.  The one pictured here is at the very foot of the Stanton Street Bridge at 919 S. Stanton (tele: 915-544-2500).  The other location is two blocks north of the bridge on the west side of the street.

Whichever store you buy from, the process is the same.  You will be required to give your name, and you will not be allowed to leave the store with your products.  You will be given a receipt and asked to wait at the foot of the bridge in front of the small building you see pictured in the lower left hand portion of the photograph.

Bridge

Just to put things in perspective, here is another photograph showing the bridge with an arrow pointing to the location of Jeta pictured above and the pickup stand.  The armed guards at the pickup stand are there to make certain you actually do go over the bridge and into Mexico.  Trying to leave the area with the products you bought in the tax free, duty free stores is strictly against the law.  Bringing these products back with you to the United States is permitted, but you will have to pay the usual import fees to the State of Texas when you leave Mexico.
