This enigmatic Olmec sculpture was found near Laguna de los Cerros, a major Olmec trading and cultural center in the Mexican isthmus. The museum's signage identifies it as a "Jaguar of Simplified Forms." The features have been worn away by time and nature, creating an eerie visage. The artifact appeared in a 1973 catalog of Olmec sculpture, published by UNAM (the National Autonomous University of Mexico, in Mexico City). The catalog described the work as a "seated figure of human aspects, with (an) enormous head." |
