The faces of the ancient gods Quetzalcoatl (the feathered serpent, on the left) and Tlaloc (the rain and fertility god) peer out from a frieze from the magnificent temple of Teotihuacan, near Mexico City. The abandoned city of Teotihuacan fascinated the Aztecs, who were the first of many archaeologists to study it. The city can still be visited today. |
