Art Samples - Ironwood Sculpture
Ironwood---a wood so heavy it will not even float---grows only in the Senora desert and certain parts of the southern United States. These beautiful sculptures were made by an isolated tribe known as the Seri. Just as the Oaxaca sculptures changed the economy of the villages which made them, the ironwood sculptures of the Seri would forever change their lives.
The Seri artists have a way of capturing the essence of any animal they choose to sculpt in a very simplified style which incorporates only what is necessary to render both the appearance and spirit of the subject. This ironwood bull is a perfect example.
The Seri are a resilient people who originated on the large Isle de Tiburon (island of sharks) in the Sea of California off the Mexican mainland across from the Baja Peninsula. Despite their famous poison arrows they were nearly exterminated two times in history, yet still remain today in Senora living lives of hunter-gatherers, basket weavers, and carvers of these magnificent ironwood sculptures. Like the Tarahumara in Northern Mexico, they have resisted all attempts to bring them into the modern world and prefer to live their lives as did their ancestors, something I hope would be respected by thoughtful people everywhere. |
